The infrared illuminator will cast an invisible ray towards the object that you are focusing and, in this way, you can see them without them seeing you. Unless, of course, they have an instrument like this on you!

The green screen that you can see is called a phosphor screen. This screen is where the image is being amplified to. It has a green color because the human eye can distinguish a green color more than other colors. In instruments such as these, you will never see an image which is in different colors. Phosphor screens last for 1500 to 2500 hours.

Devices like these are never perfect. Some NV devices have black spots on the image areas. These are blemishes on the intensifier tubes. The prices of night vision devices are lower when the black spots are bigger.
